Archaeological surveys in the area of Legio, Israel, previously revealed two Roman military cemeteries which were excavated in 2022–2023, uncovering a significant portion of a military necropolis near the Roman legionary base, including cremation and inhumation burials in varied architectural forms. Bioarchaeological analysis of the cremated remains revealed high levels of preservation and detailed data on body treatment, pyre technology, and possible ritual veneration. Select burials yielded sufficient osteological material to determine age, biological sex, and possible deliberate fragmentation practices, while animal bones, glass vessels, and ceramics from burial contexts contribute further to reconstructions of funerary customs. This study highlights both standard and regionally adapted burial practices within the Roman military, offering new insights into the lived experience and deathways of a diverse legionary population stationed at the empire’s eastern frontier.
