Abstract

The 2023 excavation season at the legionary base of Legio in Israel focused on the principia, northwestern cemetery, and the legionary amphitheatre (ludus), revealing significant architectural remains. Key discoveries include a well-preserved paved street and elements of the headquarters building, including a monumental entrance. Stratigraphic analysis and ceramic evidence point to an extended period of occupation, refining our chronological framework of the Legio II Triana and the Legio VI Ferrata presence in the southern Jezreel Valley. These findings contribute valuable insights into the operational dynamics of Roman legions in the eastern provinces, illuminating aspects of infrastructure, spatial organization, and daily life within a strategically important imperial outpost.
